FROM THE PUBLISHER-In a harrowing tale of class warfare that merges science fiction and fantasy, the powerful state organization known as the ‘Iron Heel' is determined to crush the working class-at any cost. Praised by such luminaries as George Orwell, London's prophetic political adventure continues to resonate with today's readers. THE IRON HEEL is a dystopian novel by American writer Jack London, first published in 1907. Generally considered to be ‘the earliest of the modern Dystopian, ' it chronicles the rise of an oligarchic tyranny in the United States. It is arguably the novel in which Jack London's socialist views are most explicitly on display. A forerunner of soft science fiction novels and stories of the 1960s and 1970s, the book stresses future changes in society and politics while paying much less attention to technological changes. The book is uncommon among London's writings (and in the literature of the time in general) in being a first-person narrative of a woman protagonist written by a man. John Griffith ‘Jack' London (born John Griffith Chaney, January 12, 1876 – November 22, 1916) was an American author, journalist, and social activist. He was a pioneer in the then-burgeoning world of commercial magazine fiction and was one of the first fiction writers to obtain worldwide celebrity and a large fortune from his fiction alone. He is best remembered as the author of The Call of the Wild and White Fang, both set in the Klondike Gold Rush, as well as the short stories ‘To Build a Fire‘, ‘An Odyssey of the North', and ‘Love of Life'. London was a passionate advocate of unionization, socialism, and the rights of workers and wrote several powerful works dealing with these topics such as his dystopian novel The Iron Heel, his non-fiction exposé The People of the Abyss, and The War of the Classes.
