The most awesome ocean-going vessel the world had ever seen, the mighty TITANIC struck an iceberg and sank on the night of 14th April, 1912, carrying more than fifteen hundred souls -- and unaccountable secrets -- to the icy bottom of the mid-Atlantic. Why did the crew steam full speed ahead into dangerous waters despite six wireless warnings? How able was Captain Smith? Why did the nearby ship CALIFORNIAN ignore TITANIC's distress signals? How could such a disaster ever have occurred? Walter Lord explores -- and answers -- ... Show more

Wonderful

by metra2 on Jun 14, 2012

First read Walter Lord's 1955 A NIGHT TO REMEMBER, then read THE NIGHT LIVES ON, an updating of the earlier work that helps consolidate the experience of Titanic survivors. Both are highly recommended.

Must read

by parothed on May 10, 2012

This book is a "must read" for any Titanic enthusiast or history buff. The author, who practically devoted his entire life to the tragic liner and her survivors wrote this sequel to his 1955 legendary "A Night to Remember" 31 years later. In it he analyzes the story, the ship and the collision from different perspectives. An interesting book that is easy to read and follow. Lord became close to several surviving passengers, often comminicating with them and their children about how their lives were affected by that epic tragedy.
