Your best friend died in September, you've been robbed twice, your girlfriend is leaving you, you've lost your job...and the only one left to talk to is the gay burglar you've got tied up in the kitchen... P.S. your cat is dead. An instant classic upon its initial publication, "P.S. Your Cat is Dead" received widespread critical acclaim and near fanatical reader devotion. The stage version of the novel was equally successful and there are still over 200 new productions of it staged every year. Now, for the first time in a decade, James Kirkwood's much-loved black humor comic novel of manners and escalating disaster returns to bewitch and beguile a new generation.Read Less

There is much to admire in Kirkwood's book, primarily his gifted sense of humor and the wonderful detail the late author extended to his characters. But in reading this book again after many years, it still annoys me that Kirkwood does not "drop the other gay shoe." Even though the book was published in the early 70s, there was already a body of outstanding gay literature. But heaven forfend that Kirkwood's two main characters should end up in bed together. We can infer a relationship at the end of the novel, but the denouement is red-faced and without the romantic resolution the story needs. I've always been annoyed that the author uses the phrase, "and now the capper" once too often. Perhaps I'm carping too much about a book that was meant to be lightweight. It is sometimes laugh-out-loud funny. But it could have been so much more. Still, it is a book I go back to if I need a smile.

And you think YOU'VE had a bad day!
I read this book many years ago and found it to fit my sense of humor. So I kept the book, but as the years went by, it got rather tattered. (It wasn't new when I got it). I recently had the opportunity to purchase it, so I bought 2 copies--1 for the library, 1 (the unproofed version) for me. I also bought the DVD. If you like off-the-wall humor, you'll really enjoy the book. I didn't find the movie as good. But then, a lot is left out of movies when scripted from books.

A brilliant comedy. Kirkwood is unsurpassed. A masterful story teller.
