"Sometimes funny, always creepy, genuinely moving, this marvellous spine-chiller will appeal to readers from nine to ninety." - "Books for Keeps". "I was looking forward to "Coraline", and I wasn't disappointed. In fact, I was enthralled. This is a marvellously strange and scary book." - Philip Pullman, "Guardian". "If any writer can get the guys to read about the girls, it should be Neil Gaiman. His new novel "Coraline" is a dreamlike adventure. For all its gripping nightmare imagery, this is actually a conventional fairy ... Show more

Patricia S

Better than the movie

by Patricia S on Aug 30, 2013

This is a well written, enchanting story. This edition has wonderful drawings and just enough mystery to keep you turning the pages in a hurry. Highly recommended. The movie was fun, but you have to read it to appreciate Gaiman's whimsy. More

A fine achievement

by Chapelhill1978 on Feb 18, 2010

Neil Gaiman's novel is a smart and witty psychological deconstruction of the modern myth of parental affect, the illusion of the perfect family and the social control of the well-behaved child. Shifting between a sense of mild desperation and the qrotesque horror that springs from organized family ... More

Got umph, need enemies

by Zizzle on Apr 24, 2009

An overlooked girl turns heroine as she takes on the oh-so-loving, but creepy other parents. Her real world, unremarkable in its boring freedom, is challenged by another, creepy one, with an othermother possessive as hell. A vivid memory of her real Dad, who stood up to his fear, stirs her moral juices ... More
