Robert P

Good but overly long and too detailed

by Robert P on Nov 10, 2011

The writer seems to be trying to prove what a good historian he is by providing an excess of meaningless detail. Still, it was a pretty good read if you have the patience to cut through all of that.

The Human Side

by Onthethrone on Oct 22, 2009

This book is a compilation of correspondance between the Theodore Roosevelt's family members. It gives insight into Teddy's parents, which is very uncommon in any writings about him. Thoroughly enjoyable from cover to cover.

Fascinating!

by ScorpioCatherine on Oct 27, 2007

A boy/man's life and a family of note. It is interwoven and all the more alluring in it's unfolding. You will want more when it is ended.

Young Roosevelt

by sd6161 on Oct 2, 2007

David McCullough has once again distinquished biographical details apart from legendary tales in Mornings On Horseback. This biography of Theodore Roosevelt's formative years; young "Teedie" born into a family of considerable wealth. His father, Theodore, Sr., a man with power and a reputation as a humanitarian. His mother, Martha Bulloch (Mittie) Roosevelt, a woman thought so beautiful that her southern family history of slave ownership seemed overlooked. Although McCullough's book is greatly enhanced with photographs that were preserved throughout Roosevelt's life, it is the descriptive text and the precise nature of complementing historical events with bits and pieces of facts about young Roosevelt that makes Mornings On Horseback such an inviting read. His description of "Teedie" and his brother Elliott watching Abraham Lincoln's Funeral Procession approach Union Square is one such example of McCullough's talent as an Historian who works with documents recorded and preserved prior to the modern technology available today. This is an excellent book for people of all ages to read and reflect on the meaning of leadership for our country.
