Hailed by critics as an American masterpiece, David McCullough's sweeping biography of Harry S. Truman captured the heart of the nation. The life and times of the thirty-third President of the United States, Truman provides a deeply moving look at an extraordinary, singular American. From Truman's small-town, turn-of-the-century boyhood and his transforming experience in the face of war in 1918, to his political beginnings in the powerful Pendergast machine and his rapid rise to prominence in the U.S. Senate, McCullough ... Very informative and well written. Ten years of research makes for very good reading as are most of David McCullough's efforts.

Superb

As always, McCullough serves up a richly detailed, historically scrupulous, and consistenty absorbing biography of a President who is often overlooked or relegated to the sidelines. Unreservedly recommended.

Well written, highly readable account of Harry S Truman's life and presidency. Highly recommended, eye opening account of recent American history. I suppose most American history is recent compared to Europe and Asia.

Character of an American

by brotherlew on Apr 12, 2012

The next to last honest president we've had. How he got to be that way, and why we were so lucky. This was the man who refused to commercialize the post he had held so well, saying "The Presidency is not for sale."

Good read

The author has again turned out a very readable and informative biography of a great President
