Outspoken, professional and fearless, Lt. Col. John Paul Vann went to Vietnam in 1962, full of confidence in America's might and right to prevail. He was soon appalled by the South Vietnamese troops' unwillingness to fight, by their random slaughter of civilians and by the arrogance and corruption of the US military. Reviews of A Bright Shining Lie: John Paul Vann and America in Vietnam

Doug R

The best history of Vietnam I've read

by Doug R on Jun 25, 2012

Neil Sheehan writes clearly and logically, and he relates history and anecdote with eminently readable verve and detail. I loved this superbly clear and intelligent history of Vietnam/Southeast Asia told through the story of Lt. Colonel John Paul Vann, a remarkable exemplar of an American iconoclast and brilliant, passionately loyal citizen and soldier. What a wonderful book!
