    Les Miserables

    English

In this story of the trials of the peasant Jean Valjean - a man unjustly imprisoned, baffled by destiny, and hounded by his nemesis, the magnificently realized, ambiguously malevolent police detective Javert - Hugo achieves the sort of rare imaginative resonance that allows a work of art to transcend its genre.

Les Miserables : One of my all time favourites!! So beautifully written, this book got me reading again after 15 yrs. An inspiration

by Ron Townsend on Sep 3, 2008

For ten years after reading Les Miserables I took inspiration from it in regard to how I treated other people. The unabridged version has some places that are hard to understand why Hugo included them but in all it was a superb read and I recommend to anyone who wants to understand redemption. More
