Set in the idyllic Salinas Valley in California, where simple people farm the land and struggle to find a place for themeselves in the world, these stories reflect many of the concerns key to Steinbeck as a writer; the tensions between town and city, labourers and owners, past and present. Included here are the celebrated tales, The Murderer and The Chrysanthemums.Hide synopsis

John Steinbeck is simply a great writer and the long valley stands alongside his Grape of Wrath very comfortably. He writes with enormous skill of place and atmosphere. Added to which he write touchingly about the way people sound, what is important to them and whether they are moral, immoral or amoral, all without judgement.
But he great skill is his use of language and just how much one needs to understand what he is saying.
Just dip into the Long Valley short stories and in particular my all time favourite piece of writing "The Breakfast" I perosnally don't think writing by any author comes much better than this..
