Armed with a bucket and mop, Mrs Gillespie is destined to bring misery into the life of Hamish Macbeth when he wins her maid services in a church raffle, knowing she is likely to do more snooping than actual cleaning. Yet Hamish has more upsetting issues to ponder - his former girlfriend Elspeth Grant is back in Lochdubh for a holiday with her new boyfriend. Hamish feels an ill wind coming and sure enough, Mrs Gillespie is soon found dead under suspicious circumstances. And as he investigates the case, Elspeth's presence torments the red-haired bobby , making him resort to foolish antics instead of concentrating on the murder in hand. Love the Hamish Macbeth stories and highly recommend them to anyone. Now have complete collection with exception of latest Death of a Witch. Will buy that some time in the future. Have read it thanks to our local library.
Good light reading, always enjoyable, only problem is books read too quickly!!
Here he is again, hunting down a killer as usual, being tempted out of his bachelorhood as usual, and avoiding promotion as usual. The victim is nobody's friend and the killer is disagreeable enough to avoid sympathy. The dynamic of Hamish with his lady friends is a major part of the fun. Personally I like Priscilla, who comes and goes. The landscape enriches the plot, and the Highland people are endearing. There is, of course, the unpleasant superior officer to battle as well as the criminal. I suppose the series can continue until the author dies, and we will keep going as long as Hamish does. How does Ms Beaton sleep nights with all these plots on her mind?
Hamish MacBeth is one of the most entertaining characters in fiction today. The things he says and gets away with are a hoot. It's entertaining and challenging to try and figure out who did it and how he'll uncover the guilty party. This is a read again and again series, must own!
