In her previous outing, The Last Camel Died at Noon, Amelia Peabody and her dashing husband, Emerson, discovered a fabulous lost oasis in the Nubian desert. Now, in the seventh mystery in the series, the Emerson ... Show more

A love story with adventurous interruptions

by eastcoastgal on Jul 15, 2007

Grateful for the chance to spend some quality time alone with her husband, Amelia Peabody doesn't really mind leaving their son Ramses and new ward Nefret behind when they travel to Egypt for the latest dig season. But a series of attempts on the children back in England as well as on the couple in Egypt, culminating in the abduction of Emerson and his subsequent loss of memory, turn the working vacation into a waking nightmare. Now Amelia must divide her attention between alarming reports from the "home front" and the necessity of devoting her every effort to convincing her husband --for the second time-- that they are truly meant to be. Perhaps one of her most thorough investigations of the relationship between Amelia and Emerson, in The Snake, the Crocodile and the Dog Peters has truly created a love story into which the adventure intrudes only with greatest presumption. Amnesia can often be a cheesy and contrived plot twist, but Peters has taken the tool and made it her own. She uses it to rekindle the passion that Amelia had begun to feel was dying out of her marriage, and does so with both humour and skill. The encroaching threat of the Master Criminal only adds greater urgency to Amelia's courtship of her own husband, and the resulting passion between the two is enough to remind not only Emerson, but readers too, of why the pair fell in love in the first place. A simply scrumptious read.
