Alone, on a deserted island. No weapons. Animal predators lurking where you can't see. A need for food. A drive for survival. That pretty much covers Karana's life, when her tribe sails away, and leaves her in the remains of living by herself, for years to come. There's numerous things she has to teach herself how to do--and many things that she'll discover that she will not do again. She has to learn exactly how to fend for herself--it's a life or death matter. After all, no one may ever come back to find her...
Awesome book, very eccentric--Not your average read!
You'll have to find out how Karana becomes courageous enough to take on her natural state of isolation.
I read the book Island of the blue dolphin in 4th grade and I remember loving it. I read it in class with my teachers help so Im sure most 5th/6th graders could read it. I work at a bookstore now so when I found it on the shelfs I was overcome with memories. Im going to give it to my 5th grade brother to read. hopefully he will love it. I recommend this book to youngsters.
I first read this at a friend's house when I was a little girl, because I didn't have many books (I know, boo hoo). I'm making up for it now.
Anyway, it's a man-against-nature adventure, but it was even more exciting to me as a little girl, because it was about a young girl who gets stranded on an island, along with her brother. He gets killed by wild dogs, and then she has to fend for herself. She must build shelter, find food, and fight off the dogs. She even makes weapons, which it was forbidden for women to do. She was on the island for 18 years, from 1835-1853. It made me wonder how I would fare (not well). I then bought this book for my daughters when they were old enough to read. They also loved it. Then we discovered it was made into a movie, and we watched it together. I was pleased to see that it stayed true to the book.
