Welcome to Redwall Abbey. Inside its enormous doors, mice live in peace, helping those in need and throwing epic feasts for the great and the good of Mossflower Woods. But outside a grave threat is gathering. An army of evil rats led by a vicious, one-eyed warlord, is on its way. Matthias is just one little mouse but he knows it'll take more than stones and mouse-sized arrows to keep the rats at bay. Enlisting the help of a military hare, wild sparrows and argumentative stoats, Matthias sets out to defend his freedom, his friends, and the abbey he calls home. We have some paperback copies of Redwall in our school library and one rebound paperback, but the type is so dense, it puts the kids off. This is the perfect size to entice the kids to start on the Redwall Saga. Brian Jacques books are some of my favorites in the library. He is a grand storyteller.

Martin the reincarnated
This is a lively adventure of a timid monastery mouse who may be walking in the steps of the monastery's founder Martin the Warrior. Will Matthias be able to find the sword of Martin and help defeat the rat Cluny and his brood? Will he be able to save Redwall? A fantasy reminiscent of Watership Down, Redwall captures the imagination for both adults and young adults. The fantasy elements are all there-- the timid hero, the quest, the fight between good and evil, and a sword of power. I find this book most refreshing after floundering in other fantasy for years. If you love animals this is the book for you.

Sorry I missed this one!
The set of books that came after Redwall apparently came out when I was younger, but I never heard of them until my son fell in love with the series. I got a audio version of this bok to take on a long family trip at his request, and I was hooked too. These are amazingly crafted fantasy novels with animals as the main characters in a setting that just inspires the imagination. Redwall is packed with adventure, intrigue, and intimacy that is not very common in novels that bridge the gap between adults and younger readers. If you enjoy a medival type adventure novel and have kids around 11 to 13 years old. This book is a wonderful opportunity to find some common ground and talk about a book you both read recently with out involving homework. Also great for younger kids with vivid imaginations, but a harder read for them. A great novel to read to the younger kids to keep them begging for the next time you sit together to read.
Publishers Weekly, 2007-11-12 The Redwall series celebrates its 20th anniversary with new releases. Redwall: The Graphic Novel by Brian Jacques, illus. by Bret Blevins, retells the first story in comic form. Blevins delivers action-heavy b&w artwork, which does not shy away from the violence of battle, but captures the epic nature of the abbey's struggle against the rat, Cluny, and his minions. Publishers Weekly, 1987-06-26 Only the lost sword of Martin the Warrior can save Redwall Abbey from the evil rat Cluny and his greedy horde. The young mouse Matthias (formerly Redwall's most awkward novice) vows to recover the legendary weapon. In the course of his quest, Matthias forges strong ties with various local animals. As much as the magic of the sword, it is the help of these new friends that enables Matthias to defeat Cluny once and for all. Jacques's clever use of detail creates an animal world as compelling as that of The Wind in the Willows. From the beginning, each of Redwall's characters is endowed with a unerringly distinct personality: there is a powerful badger named Constance; a mute squirrel named Silent Sam, who knows the forest better than anyone; and his mother Jess, a champion climber who leads a splendid rescue of a piece of the abbey's tapestry. This epic adventure contains elements of all grand quests, with heroic archetypes that will keep fans of Tolkein and King Arthur tales engaged to the final battle. Illustrations not seen by PW. All ages. (June)
