Though Mr. Irving's cool eye spares none of his foursome, he writes with genuine compassion for the ... Show more

Surprise Disappointment by John Irving

by BelowParforIrving on May 20, 2009

I found this book to be rather pointless. While I enjoy the satire of John Irving and have read several of his books, I found this one to be almost depressing which is not the norm for Irving. I actually wondered if Mr. Irving was taking a bit of a "mental Sabaticle" when he wrote this. I don't like to write anything negative about John Irving as he is my very favorite author and I would love to someday meet him. I find him totally fascinating. His character development surpasses all other authors I have read. The 158-Pound Marriage just fell short of my expectations for an author of Irving's caliber. Suann Rose, Houston, TX
