Very Good/Very Good. 8vo-over 7¾"-9¾" Tall Octavo 0333602161 Hadrback Hardback. First Edition. Gladstone. From the library of Tom Baker (Dr. Who TV) signed by him to inside cover. Very slight shelf wear to top edge of D/J. Price clipped to D/J. Gladstone stands alone as the only man who was four times Prime Minister. Biographically more important than that, he was the the most remarkable human being who ever held that office. This is not to say that he was the greatest Prime Minister-he made many mistakes, failed in his last major objective of Home Rule for Ireland, and left behind a demoralized and squabbling Liberal Part, But he wasy always the biggest beast in the forest and everything he touched he infused with magic. With Newman, Tennyson, Darwin and Carlyle, he was one of the natural stars of the nineteenth century. He could be wrong, self-righteous, even faintly ludicrous, but he was hardly ever dull. He made Peel look plodding, Palmerston bombastic and Disraeli flippant. The author uses Gladstone's life not only to shine light on his manifold activities but also to compare the nineteenth century with the present day: the political rhythms, travel patterns and religious assumptions of Victorian England are all related to those of today. Illustrated. 698 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions, Reference books, and all types of Academic Literature. )
I looed for Roy Jenkins' Gladstone after reading Churchill, and being enormously impressed. As well as being a towering political figure (Jenkins, as Home Secretary, abolished the death penalty, and made homosexuality legal. Compare and contrast with T Benn, who opened a couple of nuclear power stations!), he was an extraordinarily talented writer. His prose is lucid, and his handling of his material deft. On top of which i got this superb hardback dleivered to my house for around a fiver. What's not to like!
