"Rising '44" is a brilliant narrative account of one of the most dramatic episodes in 20th century history, drawing on Davies' unique understanding of the issues and characters involved. In August 1944, Warsaw offered the Wehrmacht the last line of defence against the Red Army's march from Moscow to Berlin. When the Red Army reached the river Vistula, the people of Warsaw believed that liberation had come. The Resistance took to the streets in celebration, but the Soviets remained where they were, allowing the Wehrmacht ... Show more

A great book

by Michael F on Jul 18, 2013

This is phenomenal book about the Warsaw Uprising. I like the way Davies organized the book and included numerous excepts from diaries, letters and recollections from those who fought. In particular the section concerning the German occupation leading up to the Rising was most interesting and obviously well researched. The author describes the incredible organization of the Polish Home Army and how they outfoxed the Nazis and responded to changing circumstances inside Poland. Thank God the book was written after the fall of Communism.

Books tells it like it happened. Gives an accurate historical version of the conflict between Hitler and Stalin.
