I am literally obsessed with this book; I recommend it to everybody. Not only has it helped me understand myself and the reasons behind my lifelong struggle with trying to do what I really love vs. what everybody tells me I "should" be doing, but it helps me to understand others and relate to them better. I read this book 4 months ago and I still go back to it now and then. I'm on this site now because I'm buying a copy for a friend (fellow INFP) who is confused about his own future and is ready for answers. If I could give a gift to every 20 something it would be this book.
The basic premise of this book is that your personality type will intersect with your work somewhere between satisfied and miserable. The book lays out in detail the 16 personality types. Apparently everyone in the world can pretty much fit into one of these categories...amazing but apparently true. The practical value of determining your personality type (through exercises in the book) and matching to a career type has obvious value to a career changer.
The only problem is determining exactly your personality type, and then assuming that your model construct of the work place is correct. For these purposes, the book is necessarily complicated...this will no doubt appeal to certain personality types...no disclaimer is presented in that regard.
In any case, the book offers a very interesting view of the workplace, and goes a long way toward explaining why certain types are happy and certain types are miserable in given circumstances.
I would recommend the book as an interesting insight along the way. While it may have value as a career map guide, I wouldn't skip other approaches either. To get the full effectiveness from the techniques in the book, you should probably consult with an expert in the Briggs Meyers method.
This is probably the most influential book I've read, about people. I'm now beginning to understand people and what makes them tick. I've been searching for a way to help people with career advice (and general help with problems) all my life and this book has finally given me the tools. I had no way of articulating the things I observed about people or to understand the operations of personality but now I do. I can't rate this book highly enough. It has been so helpful to me and is quite simply the best book about people I've ever read. I accept myself and others much more and feel so much more comfortable with people. I've got a brilliant system for assessing people, thanks to this book, and I can break the ice so easily with people now by taking an interest in them and their personality and how they operate. Brilliant and so much more useful and realistic than astrology or other dubious systems.
