Useful Book

I have read only the first part of Charisma, but shall say it is probably more blunt and accessible than Rieff's rather more aphoristic and allusive texts. A phrase that sticks out: In deploring the current ack of charsmatic figures Rieff laments that all we have instead are "deviants demanding their rights." Rieff is no friend of "gay culture," but then neither, in his own way, is Gore Vidal. Reared as a Biblical literalist but long strayed from that myopic path, I somehow find in Rieff's eloquent cultural conservatism an intellectually respectable fundamentalism, and I imagine him as a foil of my other Jewish culture hero, Noam Chmosky. These comments do not of course constitute a proper review, and so I shall just say: Read Rieff.
