This book is a must read if you want to understand the outside influences that have molded and shaped the nation of Afghanistan. It easily understood how one country can maintain such diversity, given it's geography, ethnic divisions, and religious convictions. It is eye opening to see how westernization has created a totally different standard of life and social expectations in urban areas, such as Kabul, Kandahar, etc., while leaving the tribal regions relatively unchanged in their social and structural cultures. This certainly explains why Centralized Governments don't work when they have no influence outside their urban confines.
