I bought this on the strength of a review in American Scientist and was not disappointed. I have a doctorate in chemistry, but was completely unfamiliar with the story of the foundation of the field. One especially creative feature that sets this apart from more conventional history-of-science narratives is the keen attention to historical process. This becomes especially clear towards the end when Johnson makes a stark contrast between the entirely qualitative work of Priestly and the quantitative work of Lavoisier and others.
