Mr William Manchester obviously shares the germanophobia of most of his compatriots.
When he writes (I quote) that in the late 1500's " the well-to-do
spent half their waking hours either masticating or defecating", he forfeits all claims to the title of historian, albeit he obviouly would amuse the readers of the SUN. As every cultured person knows, the period between 1450 and 1550 can be regarded as the golden age of German art and culture. Albrecht D?rer painted a great many V.I.P. of his time and none of them displays the girth of the average lower middle-class american woman.
Every line of the book is tainted with sarcasm and spite. This is not a history book, it is at best a caricature.
