Gates of Fire - A story of honor for the ages

by rwbenson on Jan 21, 2009

I loved this book! Pressfield grips you and keeps you engaged until the very end. If you are reading a novel to help you to fall asleep at night this is not the book. You will not be able to put it down. The story of the 300 Spartans holding off the Persian advance upon Greece at Thermopylae has been told in many ways. Pressfield tells the story through the eyes of a Spartan slave who survives the battle and is explaining to Xerxes, the Persian King, the reason the Spartans fight the way they fight. His story is a series of flashbacks which tell the reader about life in Sparta and the amazing fight at the Gates of Fire. It is a novel, so Pressfield can lend some poetic license. However, my research shows that he accurately depicts the history of Sparta and the battle at Thermopylae. When I read the final lines and then read the lines of the epitaph to the Spartans, "Go tell the Spartans, stranger passing by, that here, obedient to their laws, we lie." emotion flooded through me. If you are sixty years old you cannot help but admire the fact that King Leonidas, at 60 yrs, lead the Spartans in this final stand. These Spartans stood together and fought and died for freedom. I recommend this book!
