The Chairman. All right. Admiral, just give us a full statement of this matter. Admiral Griffin. Yes, sir. The capabilities of navy yards are--Portsmouth, N. II.--Has not foundry or machine shop facilities for undertaking engine work. Is deficient in large tools needed for repair of vessels based on that Boston, Mass.--Is deficient in large tool equipment for machine dh(;p, hut in other respects is equipped to handle comparatively large work. Boiler shop is too small for laying out and erecting work. New York, N. Y.--Is equipped to do large work. Some additions to tool equipment are necessary. Philadelphia, Pa.--Foundry is rather small, but the equipment generally is such that with the addition of a few tools, this yard could proceed with the manufacture of machinery for large ships. Norfolk, Va.--A new foundry is badly needed at this yard, but the present facilities are such that machinery for medium-size ships can be undertaken. Some additional tools will, however, be necessary. Charleston, S. C.--With the addition of a few large tools this yard would he equipped to do the machine work on the machinery of gunboats, submarines, and destroyers. A new foundry would be needed to meet all the demands for machinery of this character. Key West, Fla.--Some additions to the shop equipment is necessary to properly equip this station for the repair of small vessels. It has no faii'ities for building. Mure Island, Cal.--With some additions to the tool equipment, this yard can build the machinery for large ships.
