Marvellous! Jul 20, 2007
Having always admired Velazquez's art, I was curious about this fictionalized biography of his historical slave, Juan. It was written for young people, but don't let that fool you, or keep you from enjoying this treasure. As Juan tells us about events that shape his life, you will immediately be drawn in to this world of seventeenth-century Spain. Every little jewel of a chapter is as detailed as Juan's master's paintings. I'm not sure how the author accomplishes this, but the prose itself is almost a painting, every phrase written with precise strokes. I have seldom read fiction that presented itself in my mind's eye so vividly as this. A luminous story of quiet admiration and friendship, of art and hard work, of faith and interior struggle, of pain and joy. I loved it!
