Standard Speech Text in California Colleges Aug 13, 2007
As a California community colllege instructor, I am required and choose to use a textbook in my Public Speaking and Oral Communication classes. I have taught in 5 different colleges and The Art of Public Speaking by Lucas is, in my opinion, the yardstick by which all speech textbooks should be measured. The textbook is organized logically from Introduction to the Communication Process all the way through Speeches for Special Occasions. The language used in the book is educational, yet easy to understand. My favorite feature of the Lucas text is that each chapter begins with a table of contents outline for that chapter listing the material it covers and in what order. I design my essay tests using these guidelines and students can find topics they are seeking without leafing through the entire chapter looking for specific content. Another really valuable feature about the book is that the content doesn't vary significantly from edition to edition, so students can buy either a used or new Lucas text and still all be learning the same concepts. I always recommend that my students try to buy a used Lucas textbook instead of paying full price for one from the bookstore. It saves the students money and it's another way to recycle textbooks.
