Thie diet guidelines: Daily, at least a pound of salad and raw vegetables, a pound of green cooked vegetables, at least a cup of beans, a cup of starchy vegetables or whole grains, at least four fruits, an ounce of raw nuts, a teaspoon of oil, and a tablespoon of ground flaxseed. No meat, fish, poultry or dairy foods. Try it for six weeks and see how it works for you.
Con: You must commit to be a vegan to use this diet. It can be difficult to eat out and stay on it.
Pro: Even if you don't go 100% vegan, this diet will help you. I have been on just about every diet in the world (that makes sense!), but none of them worked for me. I was starving all the time, sometimes spending hours counting calories, etc, and could not stay on them until I reached my goal weight. Dr. Fuhrman's diet, based on mainstream scientific studies, requires a commitment to a vegan way of eating, but it works. I am eating all I want, and frequently cannot even eat all the food the diet says I can. My non-insulin dependent diabetic husband, 6'5" and normally Mr. Meat and Potatoes, agreed to try it because his blood sugar, cholesterol, and blood pressure were out of control despite medication and exercise. By the third day of the diet, his blood sugar was normal, and a month later, his doctor took him off cholesterol and blood pressure lowering medications--he didn't need them any more. His blood sugar remains low normal. Our craving for sweets, meats and starches went away after a couple of weeks, and we found restaurants where we could eat out and stay on the diet. This diet does not require expensive proprietary vitamins or foods. You can get everything you need in any well stocked grocery store.
In ten weeks, he's lost 35 lbs. and I've lost 22, we're in smaller clothes, and neither of us are ever hungry. We are more than halfway to our healthy weight, and determined to stay on Dr. Fuhrman's diet for life because we are not hungry and feel teriffic. If every other diet has failed you, and you are determined to become thin and healthy, this is the diet for you. Even if you don't stay on it 100%, every step in the diet's direction will help you be healthier.
