'Underworld' is another in the superb Dalziel & Pascoe series by Reginald Hill. It delivers so much more than an intriguing and well crafted murder mystery. The characters are real and solid and developed with empathy, psychological insight and humor. Hill is a master writer who cares for his characters and also for the world of late twentieth century working class Yorkshire. The reader ends up caring for the characters that inhabit the story and the communities they live in just as much as Hill obviously does. Hill demonstrates a keen understanding of the social, political and cultural currents running through late twentieth century Britain. It is well worth reading all 24 novels in the series.
