"Things As They Are" by Paul Horgan is the story of the illusions of childhood--and how those illusions invariably shatter as we grow up. Young Richard lives in a comforting world of dreams, but as he gets older he sees things as they "really" are: the casual brutality of schoolboys, the faithlessness of adults, the silence of God, the cruelty in his own heart. Fortunately, as reality settles in, Richard learns that hope is "also" part of things as they are.
