Maxwell's prose is quiet, poised, undramatic. His story is filled with the inevitability of "Chronicle of a Death Foretold." His choice of detail nails the novel to your memory.
If you would recognize the sound of a thoughtful Midwestern voice, you will know this prose. If you want to know how sorrow is borne, you will need this book.
