Hear about this book from NPR interview w/author Polly Platt. Wonderfully insightful and amusing guide to the French and their ways. I've bought many copies of this book and am always pressing them on people. Can't help it.

  • Extremely Helpful Insights Into The French Culture Apr 26, 2012

Received this as a gift prior to first visit to Paris this year. Although much of the information seems geared toward those living or working in France, I found it extremely helpful. Keep in mind that 21st Century Globalization has had its affects... some "rules" seem to have softened somewhat since this book was written.

Platt has a fun and entertaining style. Enjoyable read.

Platt , an American who lived in France 25 years, provides clear and useful information about living and working in France and enjoying the experience. What can appear as rudeness or coldness, or deliberate lack of helpfulness, has cultural roots that go back more than a thousand years. Platt has great affection for the French and covers almost any situation one could encounter. She also explains what the French like about Americans.
