Dr. Perlmutter touches ALL the bases for this home run of a book. He is uniquely qualified and educated to put it all together as to how and why excess sugar/carbs are the real killers. As it turns out, Dr. Atkins was right all along. Higher fat, low carb/low-to-no sugar and good protein with each meal is the way our bodies have worked for since we showed up in this world. He has excellent studies to back up everything he says and recommends. The cures for the diseases and health problems we have now are curable by changing our high carb/sugars/added sugars, low fat diet to the higher fat (including cholesterol that your body makes when you don't eat enough of it -- it is essential to our brains) lower carb/sugars/no added sugars and good protein with food and supplements when needed. I knew a long time ago when I was studying biochemistry/nutrition in my college career (undergraduate and graduate degrees) because human breast milk has MORE cholesterol than cow/goat/sheep milk. Regardless of your religious or non-religious beliefs, all mammalian milk is species specific and NOT designed to set up humans for heart disease!! The cause of our ills turns out to be sugar -- who knew -- I did. And now someone with initials beyond mine (MS, RD) has documented the case to perfection. He also has a new book, "Brain Maker" that further documents the effects of diet on our bodies and brains. Our high carb/low fat plans promoted by our government is the cause of our major new health problems today. But it can all be changed if we don't listen to the USDA (A=Agriculture and it should be Alzheimer's because the low fat, high carb/sugar diet recommendation on "My Plate" cause exactly that). Now go forth, read the book and spread the word.
