This is a short single read story about another embezzlement plot. This one is intricate and unexpected though from others like it by Howard. In this one, the person who conspires does so alone and for a reason that is not just to steal money, but to aid a love without their knowledge. Brett is a hard man and Tessa is sunshine personafied. Everyone loves her and everyone fears him. He suspects someone in her department and is looking for anyone - not specifically her. He starts out thinking to use her to gain information, but falls for her. When he is forced to believe that she is the embezzler he is near destroyed with thoughts of betrayal. She has no clue why he is there - the embezzlement has not been leaked to the company so no one is sure why he is there. But she falls for him and never realizes he is gleening info from her to aid him. When it all points to her and she is arrested on his orders, they are both nearly destroyed. This is not a plot driven suspense, but there are twists and it is a good story told fully, even given its short length. Recommended reading. Find out how the real embezzler is caught and why they did what they did.
