The ISBN system was devised beginning in 1967, and books published prior to then don't have "editions" associated with them. It's very similar with movie, music and video game UPCs. I am now on page 375 - it took me some 200 pages to figure it out and really get interested.
But as always the pieces are coming together and is proving interesting. There are a lot of characters in the novel and if I put it down for a day I may forget who is who, Characterization and prose make the book worth while.
