Historical and thought provoking May 28, 2009

I am a fan of Mr. Ehrman's body of work. This book goes into the history of ancient Jewish thought (God's chosen ones) and how they coped philosophically with being an occupied nation, thousands of years ago. It asks questions about the nature of suffering, looking to the bible for answers. There are no conclusive answers found, and this from a man who can recite the book in it's entirety. As the book is bible centric, he doesn't get into potential answers from other religious traditions such as Hinduism or Buddhism. If you are a deep thinker who likes to ponder these questions and the nature of the universe, and are a wee bit skeptical about the veracity of the bible, this book is an excellent choice. As always, he paints a picture of the mindset that people had THEN! This is an important concept for putting the scriptures into proper historical and psychological context. This book will leave you with the possibility of many future conversations with open minded people.
