The most acute case of genuine bibliomania that I am personally acquainted with, however, involved a man named Michael Hurley, who died in 1984 on the floor of his suburban Southern California bungalow, surrounded by a 35,000-volume library that, in my twenty years of book selling, ranks as the greatest collection of books ever amassed by a person of modest means. A true story that I can share with you now, in order to impart some inkling of the value and variety of rare book collecting, and the marvelous and mysterious passion with which some memorable people have pursued it. by Ken Lopez As a bookseller, I get calls almost every day asking me about the value of some "old books" that the caller has, usually in Grandma's house or a trunk in the caller's attic. The presumption is that "old" equals "valuable" and books that date back into the 19th century are "old." This presumption is almost always incorrect but what many people don't realize is that there is a category of books that are not very old but can be worth a lot of money because, despite being relatively recent, they are quite rare and considered to be important cultural milestones.
