A Visit from the Goon SquadMy favorite book of 2011. Cleverly written, with great characters and interesting span of time. I've given this book as a gift to others, and they have enjoyed it as much I did.See more

Gone with the WindA movie I can watch over and over again and enjoy as much as I did the first time I watched it.See more
Moon PalaceI went on a Paul Auster reading spree a few years back. This is the second one I read and sealed the deal on my fandom. Tangled web of plots within plots and bizarrely funny historical events. An imaginative mystery novel with great characters and dialogue.See more
The SorcererA Hungarian jazz guitarist with a mystical touch. His best work is from the late 60s, and The Sorcerer showcases Gabor Szabo and his band in top form. Weaving together standards and original compositions, his guitar playing has an Eastern touch using non-western scales. The rhythms are grooving and the sound is stripped down. Good soundtrack for late winter nights.See more
The Long GoodbyeA classic Robert Altman movie starring Elliot Gould in his prime. Altman takes a Raymond Chandler detective novel and flips it into a funny adventure of a man-out-of-time in the wild Los Angeles of the 70s. Gould is hilarious and adds so much to this surreal story. Invite some friends over and watch it back-to-back with The Big Lebowski.See more
LovelessI break this out every year about this time. The cover art tells the story—psychedelic colors and warbled dream states. If you need a break from all the earthly drags of the holidays, this music is like a gift from a futuristic shaman. I thought my record player was broken when I first put it on, but its mysterious and melodic sounds kept drawing me back in.See more
King SuckermanA fun mystery set in 1976 Washington DC. George Pelecanos is an American crime writer who has worked on The Wire and other great TV shows. His books are great to bring on trips. I burned through three of his books on a trip to Costa Rica. King Suckerman feels similar to a Quentin Tarantino movie filled with sex, drugs, fast cars, and awesome soul music. Great for a down-and-dirty travel novel to throw in your backpack.See more
