The Sunday Mercury Newspaper in New York devoted much space to the publication of correspondence received from Union soldiers and sailors. These letters, written from the field or on shipboard, provided excellent first person overviews of camp life, marches, battles, leaders, why they fought, etc. This copy is inscribed to the previous owner by Robert lee Hodge who wrote the epilogue and is a well known civil war reenactor who first came to fame by being pictured on the cover of the book "Confederates In The Attic" by Tony Horwitz. It is also inscribed and signed by Edwin C. Bearss, Civil War Historian, who in 1990 was a featured commentator for the Ken Burns PBS series-"The Civil War". 377 pages, research guide, index. Book is in Fine condition. 7 1/4 in. x 10 1/4 in.
