Under the Window: Pictures & Rhymes for Children was Kate Greenaway's first children's picture book, composed of her own verses and illustrations. The toy book, helped launch Greenaway's career as a children's book illustrator and author in the late 19th century as well as starting what became known as the "Greenaway vogue." Although Greenaway illustrated over 150 books, Under the Window is one of only two books that she wrote and illustrated. The book is considered to be one of the first earliest examples of a designer picture book, and its popularity caused it to be imitated.
Fair. Good copy for reading, may have heavy page wear with writing textual notes highlighting or be an heavily used ex library copy with library markings, stickers or stamps. Dust jacket or accessories may not be included.
Very Good+ Original quarter cloth (spine) and paste-down paper covered pictorial boards. Hardcover, very good+ in good dustjacket. Dustjacket has three 1 to 2 inch tears and several lesser tears and chips, price clipped. Book itself has corners bumped, previous owner's gift inscription, old bookseller's price dated 1946, otherwise tight, clean, paper crisp, unmarked. Children's.

Endpapers have some foxing. Tears on bottom of table of contents page, 23, 27 (also misg small piece from bottom edge), and large tear on 37. Pasted to back endpaper and inside of back cover are color illustrations from magazines.
