In this fascinating book, Seth Godin argues that now, for the first time, everyone has an opportunity to start a movement - to bring together a tribe of like-minded people and do amazing things. There are tribes everywhere, all of them hungry for connection, meaning and change. And yet, too many people ignore the opportunity to lead, because they are "sheepwalking" their way through their lives and work, too afraid to question whether their compliance is doing them (or their company) any good. This book is for those who don't want to be sheep and instead have a desire to do fresh and exciting work. If you have a passion for what you want to do and the drive to make it happen, there is a tribe of fellow employees, or customers, or investors, or readers, just waiting for you to connect them with each other and lead them where they want to go.
This is a book about leadership. Not about how to be a leader, but why you can and should be a leader. This is a brief, inspirational book that discusses the changes we have experienced technologically and how these shifts have empowered the individual to impact others. With a linked world, we can now have a huge effect on others by connecting personally with a small number of passionate followers. Gone are the days of one giant message that it used to beat everyone into submission. Today, we can seek the information and support from like-minded people in any nation on any topic. Then we can leverage their passion and network to spread our own message organically. This helps to create real value for the consumer - the ability to tap into the information and products that truly meet and fulfill their wants and needs. A tribe, then, is the group of individuals who are bonded by a common interest. You may be a part of several tribes. They can be linked via the web, connecting people with unique interest with others from all over the world. Whatever your interest, you can now connect with those who share that interest. Your emergence as a leader depends on your participation, transparency and value to the group. If you contribute value, you are accepted and elevated among your peers.
Seth Godin writes in a very quick, witty manner. He will never be accused of being long-winded. He has a witty sense of humor and shares a number of interesting stories. This is certainly a book I would recommend checking out of the library. It is an easy read, and provides several nuggets of interest - but it is not a tome to which you will refer in coming years. Honestly, if you read his blog, at [...], you can get the bulk of this information. As a matter of fact, the book reads as if it were a collection of blog postings strung together - short easy chapters each addressing a single point.
