Hardcover. Large 8vo, xx + 320pp. Original red cloth, black title, etc. to spine, frontis, top edge blue, b/w illustrations, index. A nicely done reprint of this title by Sax Rohmer (1883-1959)-original name Arthur Henry Sarsfield Ward, an extraordinarily prolific and popular novelist, who is best known for his Fu Manchu crime mystery novels. Rohmer is also said to have been a practicing occultist, and-for a time-a member of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. 'The Romance of Sorcery, ' first published in 1914, was his only work of non-fiction, and in it he sought to provide a popular account of the history of magic, from Ancient Egypt to the present day, interspersed with biographical studies of major figures like Apollonius of Tyana, Nostradamus, Dr John Dee, and Cagliostro. The book was clearly the work of a "believer" but he also maintained his critical and questioning intelligence, and attitude that won him praise from the famous debunker Houdini. A hint of shelfwear and dust, upper corners lightly bumped, otherwise a bright VG+ copy in VG dust jacket. (Dust jacket panels chafed, the slightest of edgewear, not price clipped).
