Good. B0000CITBW Hardcover with dust jacket, red cloth boards, 128 pages, 1954, author: Jacob Bronowski, Turnstile Press publishers (British import). Usually ships with delivery confirmation, ships from Austin, Texas. Book jacket shows chipping at top and bottom of spine, also some creasing and small tears along the edges poor-to-fair condition. Book itself is in good shape, name scribbled in ball-point on inside of front cover (left pastedown). A mid-century essay on the history of violence from one well-qualified from his experiences to comment, and a short play at the end, in keeping with Bronowski's multi-talented background in both the literary world and the world of science. From the endpaper: ? The Face of Violence? is the title of Dr. Bronowski? s famous radio play which in 1951 was awarded the Italia Prize as the best radio play of the preceding two years. It is written in a free and urgently rhythmic verse, and deals with the journey of an imaginary ex-Serviceman, Mark, who cannot forget the crime and violence he witnessed as a prisoner-of-war. He leaves home and searches for Crump, a symbolic figure of evil, who when found, turns out to be 'an ordinary man'-for 'violence has a human face'. The essay which precedes the play has a wide sweep, beginning in anthropology and ending in modern society. The author says, 'Like the play it is intended as a work of literature: that is, I hope it is both true and imaginative. It is a work of analysis, seeking for the roots of conduct. ' *
