The novel follows a black former major leaguer through several days while he undergoes a crisis in his life. Returning to the majors is one of the options he contemplates, and there are several flashbacks to his career and meetings with former teammates, plus a softball game in Central Park. He's a black man who gets lost in the Madison Avenue jungle of money and sex.
