The despot who runs the walled-off town of Woodbury, he has his own sick sense of justice: whether it's forcing prisoners to battle zombies in an arena for the townspeople's amusement, or chopping off the appendages of those who cross him. The Governor was voted "Villain of the Year" by Wizard Magazine the year he debuted, and his story arc was the most controversial arc in the history of The Walking Dead comic book series. Now, for the first time, fans of The Walking Dead will discover how The Governor became the man he is, and what drove him to such extremes"--

You do not need to be a fan of the comic and TV series, Walking Dead, to fully enjoy this book. The writing style and vivid details make it easy to place yourself in the middle the chaos as in suburban Atlanta as Kirkman and Bonansinga weave a story through the first month of the apocalypse. The first book in a planned trilogy, Rise of the Governor provides a parallel story arc to the comic book series revealing the backstory behind the Governor and his metamorphosis and eventual role as the head of Woodbury. Featuring a mind-blowing twist in the final few chapters, this book keeps you guessing from start to finish and definitely has a few, ?Holy cow I can?t believe that just happened!? moments. The comic?s mantra, ?Kill the undead. Fear the living.? rings true throughout, as each survivor?s true nature is revealed as they learn to survive in a new world with no rules. If you love Zombies, this is a no brainer. If you love great writing and a compelling story, pick it up. Either way, you are sure to enjoy it.

too scary for kids
I bought this for my 12 year old son and it gave him nightmares. Parents proceed with caution.
Publishers Weekly, 2011-11-28 Inspired by Kirkman's award-winning comic, this novel follows the events that transform family man Phillip into a half-crazed dictator known as the Governor in the aftermath of the zombie apocalypse. Fred Berman's narration is smooth and keeps listeners engaged throughout this audio version. He develops solid, authentic-sounding voices for most of the book's characters, particularly the authoritative Phillip, and Brian, whose voice is soft with a hint of weakness. And while some secondary character sound like caricatures, Berman more than redeems himself via his excellent pacing. As the narrative moves into more pitched moments, Berman chooses pauses and projection with a great deliberateness, adding to the suspense and making the prose all the more impactful.
