This book is without a doubt one of the most influential books I have read. I first came across it some 30+ years ago, and have given copies as gifts many times. It brings to life the succession of societies that lived at the same location in the middle east, using the vehicle of a modern-day archaeological excavation to literally "dig gown" through the earth and the years. I came away with a far broader understanding of the importance of Israel as a natural crossroads between continents. Highly recommend this book to anyone who likes history or wants a deeper view of humanity.
I first read this book almost thirty years ago and found it just as enjoyable and informative as the first reading.Michener has the knack packing adventure together with highly accurate historical information wrapped around interesting characters.
This book is definately one of his best, with many cameo's and snapshots in time, skillfully woven into an absorbing archealogical dig. A really good read.
I first read The Source about 30 years ago and remembered it as one of the best novels I'd ever read. When my adult daughter asked for a summer reading recommendation, this is the title that came to mind.
Michener takes us from the present to the past and back again with such style that you won't be able to put the book down. Although the book has over 1000 pages, you'll cry that it's over. Some books shouldn't end. They're too good.
