Highly recommended peek into the recent past

Although this beautiful book was published as a catalog to correspond with the traveling exhibition of Katherine Dreier's vast modern art collection, which was launched in 2006 by the Yale University Art Gallery, it is also useful as an educational text on this remarkable woman and the artists she supported, encouraged, or discovered. Katherine Dreier was an artist herself as well as a collector, and a unique woman ahead of her time -- this book, thankfully, is not just an album of the modern art she collected, but a highly readable biography of her life as well. In addition to the many wonderful full-color reproductions included here, are personal photographs from her private papers. In addition, the text offers much insight into a woman whose efforts were primarily responsible for advancing the American public's acceptance and understanding of modern art during the early 20th century. This catalog is wonderful way to learn a great deal about Katherine Dreier and the 20th century modern art movement in America without the heavy seriousness of a textbook. Looks great on a coffee table, too!
