I didn't actually read this but my friend read it when we borrowed it from the library. I bought this copy thinking I would refer to it in the future, but have decided not to as I have already read and gained the knowledge we are to love others like Jesus, instead of how society "determines" we should love...

Clear and scholarly
Most articulate book on the most emotional issues we face currently relative to biblical interpretation. Former bishop Spong is articulate, focused, and ultimately persuasive. He writes about the disparity between what religiously commited people profess and what they do in practice that is clearly not about Jesus' teachings. Spong writes upfront that he has had a love affair with the Bible his entire life. He brings this and his scholarship to the task of articulating what many feel intutitively-- but lacking his depth of experience with a broad range of people within a traditional religious context, scholarship, and verbal acuity-- most have not tried to articulate. In contrast to other books on these emotion-laden issues, his thoughts remain pointed: rarely getting muddled in hightly personalized/subjective emotion. Spong put himself on the line with this book and it shows. Thank you John Shelby Spong.

An incredible interpretation of the Bible written from a liberal standpoint. Bisop Spong certainly brings out the mistake of believing that everything in the Bible should be taken with a conservative interpretation. Not a book that those who believe that the Bible should always be used to direct our lives today as in reality it was written thousands of years ago and times are certainly changed.
