Excellent Interpretation of the scripture.

The book makes the scripture story come alive by depicting it through the eyes of a famous painter.

Henri Nouwen is recognized by many as a profound author of religion and spirituality. The art work is beautiful and the questions profound. With whom do you identify?

Nouwen delves deep into the parable of the Prodigal Son, and into the painting by Rembrandt showing his return. Nouwen also reflects on how both have influenced his life, and how the painting and his meditations on it opened new inspirations for him. My only complaint is the quality of the reproduction of Rembrandt's painting on the cover. It is too dark, and one of the figures is completely lost in the upper left corner in the dark. Nouwen refers to her in the book, and I had to find an online copy of the painting to see what he was talking about. But this complaint is minor--the book is absolutely inspiring in many ways.

Truths from Rembrandt

by ghmus7 on Dec 2, 2007

This book, one of Fr. Nouwens' best, begins with an experience of an encounter - but an ecounter with a painting. Nouwen travells to Russia to see the painting, and manages to encounter it "in person". By allowing the beauty and truth of the painting to soak into his mind and heart, in the same way that a believer would employ an icon, Nouwen brings forth a treasure trove of piritual riches. A unique book, and one than will nourish your life.

An honest journey of Henri Nouwen to the heart of Father God. A challenge to get close to the heart of the Father.
