An interesting, easy to read, and comprehensive history of the exploits and plundering of the Nile Valley by early archaeologists and explorers. Brian Fagan takes a chronological approach to key events without over-intellectualising. The stories read as vignettes of first class story telling. 'Rape of the Nile' is a must read for anyone interested in the exploits and damage caused by early archaeologists in Egypt.

the rape of the Nile
The book is an excellent summary of the 19th century diversification of interests in art from the Greco-Roman world to a more ample context of oriental art. If a criticism can be made is that more space could have been given to the ancient interest in Egypt and that there is a certain overrepresentation for Belzoni. But the book is an excellent source of documentation on the growing knowledge
on this ancient civilization.

History of ancient Egypt's treasures
This book is filled with wonderful drawings and facts about the first men who went looking for artifacts to sell primarily to England and France. I would recommend it for anyone interested in the region.
