Good. First edition (same date on title and copyright pages; no additional printings listed). Contemporary diamond patterned brown cloth, stamped gilt lettering, 4x6 ¼ inches, 186 pp + 12 pp publisher's catalog. Hardcover, good. Corners bumped with a bit of cardboard exposed there, water(? ) stain and drop marks on cloth, three 1/8th inch nicks at head of spine, two ½ inch tears at foot. Internally, previous owner's (Edmund Pearsall ) signature in pencil, an approximately 4 inch piece torn off corners of both first free rear endpapers, moderate foxing throughout, 3 or 4 dogears, otherwise tight, clean, relatively crisp and unmarked. Realistic novel, with much social commentary, about life in old Manhattan, with some interesting observations on the use of flannel, bathing and ventilation for preserving health.
