The Other Queen

Stunning historical novel from the author of THE OTHER BOLEYN GIRL and THE BOLEYN INHERITANCE, in which Mary, Queen of Scots, is placed under house arrest with the newly-married Bess of Hardwick and the Earl of Shrewsbury, but fights to regain her kingdom and more. Mary is Queen of Scotland but she has been forced to flee her land and take refuge in an England that is ruled by her cousin Elizabeth. But England, precarious in its Protestant state, set against the mighty powers of Spain, France and Rome, doesn't need a charismatic Catholic figurehead at large. So Elizabeth's chief advisor, Cecil, devises a plan in which Mary will live under guard with his trusted accomplice: Bess of Hardwick. Bess is a self-made woman, a shrewd survivor. She is newly married to her fourth and most distinguished husband, the Earl of Shrewsbury. But what marriage can withstand the charms of Mary? Or the threat of rebellion that she always carries? Mary must wait in her privileged imprisonment for the return to Scotland and her infant son; but waiting is not the same as doing nothing! With her characteristic combination of superb storytelling and authentic historical background, Philippa Gregory brings to life this period of great change, in a riveting tale of betrayal, loyalty, politics and passion. Good Reading!

by mawillia on Jun 12, 2009

I am a great fan on Ms. Gregory's writing. I have been especially fond on the books written on Elizabeth 1, Anne Boleyn, Mary Queen of Scots, and Catherine of Aragon. I love her period detail which she fleshes out with her intelligent characters and story lines.

A look into the Elizabethean Monarchy

by Auldphart on Feb 9, 2009

Good historical accuracy combined with a look into the personalities and beliefs of the times. Using a different character's voice for each chapter really brought the era to life. At first you see Mary Stewart as a very sympathetic character and only slowly do you begin through her interactions, to see her as an amoral, abusive, manipulative, and dangerous "Beep". A great read and good bit of history in an accessable form.

Which Queen?

by donna on Sep 30, 2008

Mary,Queen of Scots, was only 26 years old when she crossed the Scottish border into England to seek the help of her cousin, Queen Elizabeth I. What she received was life imprisonment simply because of who she was. Her jailors, on Elizabeth's behalf, were a newly married couple - Bess of Hardwick and The Earl of Shrewsbury. These three form the basis of a triangle that would have a tremendous impact on the rest of their lives. Philippa Gregory uses these circumstances to craft a passionate tale of love, loyalty and honor which is a delight to read

The Jewel in Philippa Gregory's Crown

by Kitsy52 on Aug 14, 2008

I have been a big fan of Philippa Gregory for years. I have read all her books and given them as gifts to friends and family. I read this book in one night. It is truly "the Jewel in her Writing Crown". It shows three people, including Queen Mary, and what they want through during Mary's imprisonment in England. It is a completely new look at Mary's life and her effect on others. Brilliantly done. Buy it as soon as you can. You will want to give it to your family and friends. You will also want to read it over and over. BRAVO!!!
